Gian Maria Tosatti Unveils Quadriennale di Roma Program for 2022-2024

institutional · 2026-04-27

Gian Maria Tosatti, recently appointed artistic director of the Quadriennale di Roma, has outlined a three-year program (2022-2024) aimed at revitalizing the institution ahead of its 2025 exhibition. The plan includes Panorama, a project involving 300 studio visits by 15 curators across Italy, with daily critical texts published on a revamped website. A new quarterly magazine, Quaderni d'arte italiana, produced with Treccani, will launch in March 2022, offering bilingual analysis of 21st-century Italian art. A university network coordinated by Raffaella Perna will foster doctoral research, with two 12-month grants for studies on Italian contemporary and digital art. Monthly exhibitions starting September 2022 will feature one to three works derived from critical essays. A festival of words is scheduled for September 2022. The initiative 'Porta aperta' invites public contributions via an online button. The Quadriennale also benefits from €600,000 in funding from the Ministry for Youth Policies, led by Fabiana Dadone. Tosatti's appointment, alongside his role as sole artist of the Italian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, has sparked debate, but President Umberto Croppi views criticism as a sign of vitality.
