Gian Maria Tosatti's 'Damasa' Enters Capodimonte's Permanent Collection

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Gian Maria Tosatti's installation 'Damasa' (2017) enters the permanent collection of the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples on December 2, 2023, thanks to the PAC 2022-2023 plan and director Sylvain Bellenger. The work, originally shown at Galleria Lia Rumma, is installed in room 82, which Tosatti dedicates to writer Anna Maria Ortese. The room faces the port, a location tied to Ortese's life before WWII. 'Damasa' recreates a domestic space with ash, burnt newspapers, furniture, and objects transforming into white onyx, symbolizing the soul. Two sculptures by Giuseppe Vaccà, Ortese's maternal grandfather, are displayed at the entrance. Bellenger states the room will be named 'stanza di Damasa.'
