Gian Marco Montesano's Mon histoire à moi at Galleria Claudio Poleschi in San Marino

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Galleria Claudio Poleschi in San Marino presents 'Mon histoire à moi', a retrospective of Gian Marco Montesano (Turin, 1949) curated by Carlo Vanoni. The exhibition covers nearly half a century of the artist's work, which emerged during the rise of the Transavanguardia but stood apart by using painting as a neutralized, documentary tool. Montesano's subjects are drawn from history and personal archives: postcards, photographs, yellowed magazines, film stills, religious icons, and political propaganda. His approach was influenced by friendships with Gilles Deleuze and Jean Baudrillard during his long stay in Paris. The installation mimics digital infinity scrolling, with no thematic or chronological order, and includes a video projection by Luca Condorelli that juxtaposes historical and current footage. Vanoni stated that unlike fleeting contemporary images, painting stops time and holds the viewer before the work. The catalogue features Montesano's philosophical confessions published for the first time.
