Gian Enzo Sperone's 400-piece collection on view at MART Rovereto
The MART in Rovereto hosts a major exhibition dedicated to Gian Enzo Sperone (Turin, 1939), the influential gallerist and collector. Titled 'Sperone, Collezionista per vocazione' and conceived by Vittorio Sgarbi, curated by Denis Isaia with Tania Pistone, the show presents over 400 works spanning from the 14th century to the present. The installation by Atelier Remoto uses acid green and fuchsia, with large quadreries and thematic sections. Sperone opened his first gallery in Turin in 1963 with a Lichtenstein show, later expanding to Milan (1966-67 with Graziano Ghiringhelli), Rome (1972 with Konrad Fischer), and New York (1972, then from 1975 with Fischer and Angela Westwater as Sperone Westwater Gallery, now in a Norman Foster building on Bowery). The collection includes works by Pablo Picasso, Peter Halley, Wim Delvoye, Julian Schnabel, Warhol, Schifano, Tano Festa, Transavanguardia artists (Cucchi, Chia, Clemente, Paladino, De Maria), Boetti, Paolini, Kosuth, Long, as well as early Italian panels, futurist pieces by Giacomo Balla, spatial concepts by Lucio Fontana, and works by Arman, Manzoni, Cagli. Highlights include a section on India with 60 miniatures (16th-18th c.) alongside two Schnabel Shiva portraits (2007), and a print section with Dürer, Piranesi, Goya, Von Müller. The exhibition ends with Gino De Dominicis's 'Tentativo di volo'. The show runs at MART Rovereto.
