Giacomo Serpotta Exhibition and Autumn Art Guide in Palermo

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A major exhibition dedicated to Giacomo Serpotta, the Sicilian Baroque stucco master, is held at the Oratorio dei Bianchi in Palermo. The show, promoted by Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Italia Mediterraneo, features over 100 works including paintings, marbles, jewelry, ivories, drawings, prints, and stuccoes, tracing Serpotta's career and his circle. Serpotta, who never left Sicily, invented the allastratura technique that makes stucco appear like marble. His masterpiece, the Oratorio di San Lorenzo, still attracts visitors despite damage and theft, including Caravaggio's Nativity stolen in 1969. Meanwhile, the Castello di Carini hosts Moon, a contemporary art project launched in July by artists Giuseppe Buzzotta (b. 1983) and Gabriella Ciancimino (b. 1978), with critic Daniela Bigi. Current exhibitions include works by Gianni Politi, Mary Zigouri, and Campostabile/Stefania Zocco. Artist residencies in November and December will feature Ute Muller and Christoph Meier. A workshop titled 'The seedlings need lights' runs from October to March, engaging local youth and migrants. The Le vie dei tesori festival in October opens 90 hidden sites across Palermo, including crypts, villas, and churches. The article also recommends dining at Bye Bye Blues in Mondello (chef Patrizia Di Benedetto), I Pupi in Bagheria (chef Tony Lo Coco), and Ristorante Palazzo Branciforte, as well as accommodations at Lago Welcome Palermo @ Gattopardo Apartments and N38E13.
