Giacomo Ceruti exhibition in Brescia reexamines a rediscovered Lombard master

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Fondazione Brescia Musei has announced its 2023 program, which includes a major exhibition on Giacomo Ceruti (1698-1767) at the Museo di Santa Giulia, curated by Roberta D'Adda, Francesco Frangi, and Alessandro Morandotti. The show aims to restore Ceruti's place in 18th-century European art, highlighting his portraits, still lifes, and scenes of peasant life. It traces his rediscovery in the 20th century, notably by Roberto Longhi, and presents new research linking Ceruti's work to Venetian and French painting. The exhibition features fourteen of the sixteen canvases from the 'Ciclo di Padernello,' discovered in 1931 and last seen together in 1953. Loans come from Italy, Vienna, and Gothenburg, including works by Ribera, Fra Galgario, Rigaud, and Piazzetta. The show also presents the mysterious 'Maestro della tela jeans.' A contemporary intervention by David LaChapelle complements the exhibition. Brescia shares the 2023 Italian Capital of Culture title with Bergamo.
