Giacometti's Sculptures Dialogue with Old Masters at Prado Bicentennial
The Museo del Prado in Madrid presents an unprecedented exhibition integrating 20 works by Alberto Giacometti into its permanent collection galleries until July 7, 2019. Curated by Carmen Giménez, the show places 18 bronze sculptures and two oil portraits among masterpieces by Velázquez, El Greco, Tintoretto, Titian, Rubens, and Zurbarán. Giacometti never visited the Prado but saw evacuated works in Geneva during the Spanish Civil War. The exhibition, part of the museum's bicentennial celebrations, is organized with the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, which lent most pieces. The sculptures date from 1945 to 1966, including Homme qui marche, Femmes de Venise, Grandes Femmes, and Le Chariot. The two paintings are portraits of Isaku Yanaihara (1961) and Diego Giacometti (1964). Key juxtapositions include La Piazza facing Las Meninas, Femmes de Venise mirroring Tintoretto's Washing of the Feet, and a solitary Leg confronting Zurbarán's Hercules. The exhibition highlights Giacometti's engagement with Spanish and Venetian old masters.
