Giacinto Di Pietrantonio Curates Second Autostrada Biennale in Prizren
The second edition of Autostrada Biennale, titled "La rivoluzione siamo noi" after Joseph Beuys's 1971 work, will take place from July 21 to September 21, 2019, across various locations in Prizren, Kosovo. Directed by Italian curator Giacinto Di Pietrantonio (born 1954), the biennial features thirty international artists who explore the spirit of daily and personal revolution rather than a specific theme. Di Pietrantonio was contacted by the organizers in October 2018 and accepted immediately, drawn to Kosovo as a frontier country needing support. Prizren, a city of about 70,000 inhabitants founded by Romans, lacks art venues, so exhibitions will be held at the medieval castle, bus station, gymnasium, and streets. The budget is limited, but site-specific works will be produced. Notable participants include The Cool Couple with "Emozioni Mondiali," Giuseppe Stampone with "La Primavera Araba," Mucci Comix with the comic "Sgomento," Giulio Alvigani handling social media, and Francesco Vezzoli with a work featuring Gloria Steinem. Di Pietrantonio also invited the Orkide collective, a group of Turkish women who crocheted decorations on trees, after discovering their spontaneous art in Prizren. The title references Beuys's piece, which Di Pietrantonio owns and keeps at his home entrance, symbolizing a personal revolution through art rather than political ideology.
