Ghana regains Asante crown jewels from London museums under long-term loan
The Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum have returned 32 gold and silver pieces of the Asantehene crown jewels to Ghana under a three-year renewable loan agreement. The objects were looted during the 19th-century Anglo-Asante wars and include a gold peace pipe, the state sword Mpomponsuo, and a ceremonial hat called Denkyemke. UK law prevents permanent restitution, but Ghana accepted the loan, which can be extended for another three years. The items will be displayed at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, capital of the Asante region. Nana Oforiatta Ayim, special advisor to Ghana's culture minister, told the BBC: 'They are part of the soul of the nation. They are pieces of us that are returning.' Victoria & Albert Museum director Tristam Hunt acknowledged institutional responsibility but insisted the arrangement 'is not a permanent restitution by stealth.' Ghana's lead negotiator expressed hope for 'a new sense of cultural cooperation' after generations of rancor. The loan agreement is with the current Asante king Otumfo Osei Tutu II, not the Ghanaian government. The Asante Empire was one of West Africa's most powerful states, and its monarchy continues to hold authority; King Otumfo Osei Tutu II attended the coronation of King Charles III last year. The situation echoes Greece's ongoing demand for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, which the British Museum has refused to loan, fearing it would acknowledge ownership.
