Ghana debuts national pavilion at 2019 Venice Biennale with six artists exploring freedom
Ghana will make its inaugural appearance at the 2019 Venice Biennale with a national pavilion titled 'Ghana Freedom', referencing a song by musician E.T. Mensah. Six artists—El Anatsui, Ibrahim Mahama, Felicia Abban, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, John Akomfrah, and Selasi Awusi Sosu—will present works across installations, photography, painting, film, and video, examining legacies and trajectories of freedom. The pavilion, designed by architect David Adjaye and sponsored by Ghana's President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will be situated at the Arsenale and accompanied by a publication. Curator Nana Oforiatta Ayim emphasized the significance of this debut at a narrative-building event like the Biennale, particularly amid discussions on migration, diaspora reconnections during Ghana's 'year of return', cultural object repatriation, and moving beyond the postcolonial era. The pavilion marks a pivotal moment for Ghana's cultural representation on the global stage, highlighting contemporary artistic voices and national identity in an international context.
