Getty Villa Reopens with Chronological Rehang and Two New Exhibitions

The Getty Villa, located in Malibu, California, has introduced a significant reorganization of its antiquities collection, transitioning from a typological to a chronological format. Established in the 1970s as a replica of the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, the villa serves as a home for Jean Paul Getty's ancient art collection, which spans from the Neolithic era to the Late Roman Empire. Under the guidance of director Timothy Potts, the new layout showcases 6,000 years of Greek and Roman art, covering various periods including the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman. Notable features include first-century frescoes from the Villa of Numerius Popidius Florus, a newly curated Etruscan gallery, and a section dedicated to Athenian ceramics. Additionally, the villa is hosting two exhibitions: "Palmyra: Loss and Remembrance" and "Plato in LA: Contemporary Artists' Visions," featuring works from various contemporary artists, both running through 2019.
