Getty Villa grounds burn in Palisades fire, collection safe

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-24

On January 7, the Palisades fire reached the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. J. Paul Getty Trust president Katherine E. Fleming confirmed that trees and vegetation burned but staff and the collection are safe. The museum had cleared brush for fire mitigation and sealed galleries with air handling systems; double-walled construction protects the antiquities. The Villa, built in 1974 and reopened in 2006, houses 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan works. The 3,000-acre fire forced over 30,000 evacuations. The museum is closed until January 13.
