Getty Research Institute Acquires Frank Gehry's Archive

The Getty Research Institute has acquired the archive of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, comprising approximately 120,000 drawings, over 1,000 sketches, 280 models, correspondence, and more than 100,000 slides spanning his career from 1954 to 1988. The collection covers over 280 projects conceived or realized during this period, predating iconic works like the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. It also includes digital files from Gehry's pioneering use of 3D software, such as those for the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Vitra Design Museum. Senior curator Maristella Casciato will oversee the archive. A preview will be featured in the exhibition "Berlin/Los Angeles: Space for Music" starting April 25, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Berlin-Los Angeles partnership, showcasing drawings, a model, and photographs of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Getty already holds archives of major architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Coop Himmelblau, Daniel Libeskind, Aldo Rossi, Philip Johnson, Yona Friedman, and Californian designers Frank Israel, Pierre Koenig, Ray Kappe, and John Lautner.
