Getty Foundation Grants $180,000 for Stadio Flaminio Conservation Plan

The Getty Foundation has awarded $180,000 to the Stadio Flaminio in Rome as part of its Keeping it Modern initiative, supporting the development of a conservation plan for the 1960 Olympic venue. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi, the stadium was declared an 'excellence work' by Italy's DARC in 2005 but has suffered from improper interventions, neglect, and material aging. The grant, part of a $1.66 million total distributed among 12 buildings worldwide, was secured by the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Association, Do.Co.Mo.Mo Italia, the Municipality of Rome, and Sapienza University's Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. The plan aims to preserve the modernist masterpiece, though actual restoration costs are estimated at €5 million, with annual management costs of €1.5 million. Engaging private investors remains challenging due to structural constraints. Marco Nervi of PLN Project emphasized that the conservation plan lays the groundwork for protection. The risk that the Getty funding may be wasted if implementation funds are not secured is acknowledged.
