Getty Acquires First Pointillist Painting: Georges Lemmen's Portrait of His Sister

The J. Paul Getty Museum has acquired Georges Lemmen's 'Portrait of his sister Julie crocheting' (also known as 'Young Woman Crocheting'), marking the museum's first pointillist painting. The acquisition was facilitated by Gallery 19C and French & Company, with Henry Zimet of French & Company playing a key role. The painting was exhibited at TEFAF Maastricht in March 2026, where it was a centerpiece of Gallery 19C's stand and drew admiration from visitors for Lemmen's pointillist technique. Scott Allan, Curator of Paintings at the Getty, expressed enthusiasm, noting the painting's 'wall power,' intimate portrayal, and vibrant Neo-Impressionist palette, and emphasized that it fills a major gap in the museum's collection. The acquisition adds a significant work by a Neo-Impressionist artist to the Getty's holdings, enhancing its representation of late 19th-century European art.
