Gerti Tetzner's Banned DDR Novel 'Gegen Wind' Published After 45 Years

Gerti Tetzner's novel 'Gegen Wind' (Against the Wind), banned by DDR censorship in 1981, has finally been published by Aufbau Verlag, 45 years after the ban. The book, described as an impressive parable about the failure of the socialist utopia, explores the fate of DDR ideals and their contemporary relevance. The edition is part of a series of Tetzner's works being reissued, following last year's new edition of 'Karen W.' by the same publisher. Both editions are connected to Carsten Gansel, a literature professor known for his persistent research that has significantly shaped public perception of DDR literature. Instead of a traditional afterword by Gansel, the book features a long interview with the now 89-year-old author, conducted by Gansel. The interview captures Tetzner's emotional state, still moved by the novel's ending, and conveys her calm, friendly voice as she discusses her work and the historical context. The publication marks a significant moment for DDR literature, bringing a previously suppressed work to a new audience and prompting reflection on the legacy of the socialist experiment.
