Germany to Boost Memorial Site Funding by 10 Million Euros

German Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer has announced an additional 10 million euros for memorial sites dedicated to the Nazi era and the SED dictatorship in the coming year. Half of the funds will support project funding, while the other half will strengthen federally supported memorials, covering higher personnel costs and increased security expenses. The beneficiaries include the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, the Dachau and Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorials, the Topography of Terror, and the Saxon Memorials Foundation. The announcement is contingent on the approval of Weimer's budget draft in budget negotiations. Weimer emphasized the need for strong memorial sites in times of increasing disinformation and historical falsification, and as eyewitness voices fade. He stated that denying historical facts or attacking memorial sites relativizes history and defames victims, hence the support for educational work and protection of staff, visitors, and the sites themselves.
