artist · 2026-05-18

German painter Harald Metzkes, known as the 'Cézannist of Prenzlauer Berg', died at 97 in Wegendorf, Brandenburg, surrounded by family. His son, sculptor Robert Metzkes, confirmed the news to German press. A central figure of the Berlin School, Metzkes built a singular career in East Germany by resisting official socialist realism. His work featured harlequins, circus scenes, and allegorical atmospheres, blending classical references to Rembrandt and Velázquez with a personal pictorial language. Born in 1929 in Bautzen, Saxony, he trained as a sculptor and stonemason before studying painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and later under Otto Nagel at the German Academy of Arts in Berlin. From the 1950s, he was part of the Berlin School, a group of artists working parallel to official cultural policy. Despite institutional recognition in the GDR, he refused heroic socialist narratives, instead creating a 'theater of the world' filled with metaphors and masks. Notable works include 'The Removal of the Six-Armed Goddess'. In 1984, one of his paintings was sent to the Venice Biennale, boosting his international recognition. Until late in life, he maintained a disciplined studio routine near Berlin, painting daily from early morning. He once said, 'The viewer must find their own associations.'
