German collectors donate 150 Beuys multiples to Münster museum

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

Manfred and Ingrid Rotert, a reclusive collector couple from Osnabrück, Germany, have donated over 150 multiples by Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) to the Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History in Münster. The collection, assembled since 1971, includes iconic works such as Felt Suit (1970), Capri-Battery (1985), and The Silence (1973). It will be presented at the museum on September 29, 2018, with an exhibition of the acquired works. The Rotert collection is notable but not the largest: British collectors Andy and Christine Hall own 550 Beuys works, and in 2006 philanthropist Eli Broad purchased about 570 Beuys multiples for an estimated $3 million. Separately, the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation announced its closure. Founded in 1999 after Lichtenstein's death, the foundation was led by his widow Dorothy Lichtenstein. Its holdings will be donated to the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian Archive of American Art.
