German artist Henrike Naumann dies at 41, weeks after being selected for Venice Biennale 2026

artist · 2026-03-21

Henrike Naumann, the German artist chosen to represent Germany at the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026, has died at age 41 after a brief severe illness. Born in 1984 in Zwickau, East Germany, Naumann was known for installations using secondhand furniture and domestic objects to explore the fractures of German reunification and the persistence of socialist and post-socialist ideologies. Her work often addressed right-wing extremism, notably in 'Triangular Stories' (2012) and '14 Words' (2018), which referenced the National Socialist Underground. The latter, presented at MMK Frankfurt, involved the entire interior of a flower shop. Naumann studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and the Film University Potsdam-Babelsberg, bringing a cinematic attention to space. Her international visibility grew with Documenta 15 in 2022 and her US debut at SculptureCenter New York with 'Horseshoe Theory', intertwining design, meme culture, and political theory. The Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, which curates the German Pavilion, announced her death, calling her a central and generous presence. Her death follows that of curator Koyo Kouoh last summer, marking a tragic edition of the Biennale.
