Gerhard Richter's Paper Works at the Louvre

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Louvre presents over one hundred works on paper by Gerhard Richter, from June 7 to September 17, 2012. The exhibition coincides with Richter's retrospective at Tate Modern (Oct 6, 2011 – Jan 8, 2012), Nationalgalerie Berlin (Feb 12 – May 13, 2012), and Centre Pompidou (Jun 6 – Sep 24, 2012). Born in Dresden in 1932, Richter studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, fled East Germany in 1961, and continued his studies in Düsseldorf. He represented West Germany at the 1972 Venice Biennale. The show spans his graphic oeuvre from early linocuts (1957) and ink landscapes of the Elbe to the nervous pencil scratches of the Halifax series (1970s), watercolors, and recent oil-on-paper works. Curated by Marie-Laure Bernadac and Carel van Tuyll from the Louvre's Department of Graphic Arts.
