Gerhard Richter's Overpainted Photographs Debut at Luma Arles

exhibition · 2026-05-07

The Fondation Luma in Arles presents three exhibitions exploring memory, including Gerhard Richter's 'Overpainted Photographs' series, with some works shown for the first time. Richter, now 94, selected 120 works from his private archive, created since the mid-1980s by dragging photographs through leftover paint. The chronological hanging, determined by Richter using a room model, begins with the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. Curator Vassilis Oikonomopoulos describes the series as 'diary-like,' capturing different realities and time. Other exhibitions include Zaha Hadid's early sketches and oil paintings, previously shown at Serpentine Gallery in 2016, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist for her tenth death anniversary. Julianknxx's commissioned works 'In Search of … Incredible' explore colonial memory and oral traditions. Richter's 'Overpainted Photographs' run from 2026 to 2027 at Luma Arles.
