Gerhard Richter's Landscape Retrospective at Kunstforum Vienna
The Kunstforum Vienna presents 'Gerhard Richter: Landschaft', a major survey of the German painter's landscape works, curated by Hubertus Butin and Lisa Ortner-Kreil. The exhibition features approximately 140 works—including paintings, photographs, graphics, and artist books—drawn from fifty international sources. Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, fled to Düsseldorf in 1961 and later settled in Cologne. His landscapes, often based on photographs, explore the tension between reality and abstraction, employing techniques like blurring, layering, and scraping. The show is organized into five thematic sections, highlighting Richter's dialectical strategy of concealment and revelation. A standout piece is the large abstract painting 'Sankt Gallen' (1989). Richter, now 88, has announced his retirement from painting, though associates suggest he may only be giving up large-format works. The exhibition runs until February 14, 2021, with COVID-19 restrictions limiting visitors to 200 at a time.
