Gerhard Richter's First Belgian Exhibition in 40 Years at S.M.A.K.

Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden on February 9, 1932, celebrates his 85th birthday with a solo exhibition at S.M.A.K. in Ghent, marking his first show in Belgium since 1976. Titled 'About Painting,' the exhibition runs from October 21, 2017, to February 18, 2018, and is organized in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Bonn. It features 25 works from the 1960s juxtaposed with five recent paintings and sculptures, highlighting the consistency of Richter's ongoing exploration of painting's language. The show reflects his refusal to be confined to a single expressive mode, emphasizing surface design and the illusory nature of art, blending classical study with photography and new technologies.
