Gerhard Richter's 'Claudius' finally donated to MAC USP after decade-long custody
Gerhard Richter's 1986 artwork 'Claudius' has been officially donated to the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo after years of uncertainty. The painting was confiscated by Brazil's Receita Federal in 2009 and later given to IPHAN, which temporarily loaned it to MAC USP in 2010. Despite multiple inquiries regarding its fate, the piece remained stored for years. In 2013, it was exhibited during the museum's relocation to Parque Ibirapuera. Finalizing negotiations between MAC USP and IPHAN in late 2019 led to the donation being completed in 2020, integrating 'Claudius' into the museum’s permanent collection.
