Gerhard Richter returns to Engadin after 30 years with multi-venue exhibition
Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932 and widely regarded as one of the greatest living painters, is exhibiting in the Upper Engadin region after a thirty-year hiatus. The exhibition spans multiple venues: the Nietzsche-Haus, the Segantini Museum, and the new Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz gallery. It features over 70 works including paintings, painted photographs, drawings, and objects curated by Dieter Schwartz, a leading expert on Richter. The show traces Richter's engagement with landscape, from his first mountain paintings in 1968 to later works that blur photography and painting, such as 'St.Moritz' (1992) and 'Silsersee' (1995). Richter's approach is described as 'photo-unrealist,' using blur effects and paint applied to photographic prints. The exhibition runs until April 13, 2024, and is held at the Nietzsche Museum, Segantini Museum, and Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz. Richter previously had a solo show at the Nietzsche-Haus about thirty years ago. The Engadin region is also associated with Giovanni Segantini and Friedrich Nietzsche, who lived and worked there.
