Gerda Taro and Robert Capa: War Photography Pioneers at Camera Torino

The Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Robert Capa and Gerda Taro, which will be open until June 2. This showcase features approximately 120 photographs documenting their collaboration from 1934 to 1937. It underscores Taro's significance as a trailblazing female war photographer and concludes with her final images prior to her death in 1937, marking her as the first female journalist to die in combat. A segment of the exhibition is devoted to the 'Mexican Suitcase,' a collection of 4,500 negatives discovered in the late 1990s that helped recognize Taro's contributions. Curators Monica Poggi and Walter Guadagnini highlight Taro's visual skills, and the exhibit includes excerpts from the 2021 documentary 'Searching for Gerda Taro' along with details of her funeral from August 1, 1937.
