Georgia O'Keeffe graphic novel commissioned by Centre Pompidou

publication · 2026-04-27

The Centre Pompidou in Paris commissioned Luca de Santis and Sara Colaone to create a graphic novel biography of Georgia O'Keeffe, titled "Georgia O'Keeffe, Amazzone dell'arte moderna" (Oblomov Edizioni, Bologna 2022). The commission followed French interest in the artists' previous work on Leda Rafanelli, a figure seen as parallel to O'Keeffe. The museum intended the comic to complement a recent O'Keeffe exhibition and introduce the artist to European audiences, where she is less known than in the US. The 192-page book uses flashbacks, starting from the death of Alfred Stieglitz, O'Keeffe's husband and mentor. De Santis, with a film background, structured the narrative like a storyboard, emphasizing O'Keeffe's self-determination and her struggle against being defined as a muse or feminist icon. The artwork uses ink, charcoal, and pencil, with a color palette synthesizing O'Keeffe's own. De Santis notes the challenge of portraying O'Keeffe's complexity, including her flaws, and aims for a broad audience. The book is priced at €23.
