Georgia Museum of Art to Present First Major Edmonia Lewis Retrospective
From August 8, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the University of Georgia's Georgia Museum of Art will present "Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone," marking the first significant retrospective of the 19th-century sculptor, who was both Black and Indigenous. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Peabody Essex Museum, will showcase around 30 of Lewis's sculptures sourced from various public and private collections in the U.S. and internationally, along with other artifacts that highlight her exceptional skill in marble and her extraordinary life. The Art Newspaper has described the exhibit as a "must-see," while Art in America refers to it as "an act of reclamation." The event receives substantial backing from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Luce Foundation.
