George Rouy's 'REPRISE' Opens at Hannah Barry Gallery and Hauser & Wirth New York

George Rouy's upcoming exhibition, titled 'REPRISE', will be showcased at two locations: Hannah Barry Gallery in London from 4 June to 12 September 2026, and Hauser & Wirth New York from 10 September to 24 October 2026. This exhibition features different sets of paintings from the same series, delving into concepts of repetition, transformation, collective care, and fluid identity. The term 'REPRISE' is derived from the Old French word 'reprendre', which translates to 'to take up again', reflecting Rouy's episodic exhibition style that revisits themes of pluralized bodies and reconstruction. New works, including 'Torso', transition from drawing to larger color paintings that examine skin and muscle translucency. A fresh series, 'Procession', illustrates monumental figures being carried, reminiscent of classical pietà yet resonating with modern emotional depth. Additionally, Rouy presents 'Unknown', a collection of small paintings that portray fictitious identities used by bots, challenging notions of stable origins and truth. Influenced by thinkers like Søren Kierkegaard and bell hooks, Rouy's art resists fixed identities, maintaining the body and image in perpetual flux.
