George Jaques on 'Sunny Dancer': More Than a Diagnosis

British director George Jaques discusses his new film 'Sunny Dancer', a feelgood comedy about teenagers with cancer, in an interview with kulturnews.de. Jaques, who was 23 when writing the script and 24 during filming, aimed to create an ensemble piece reminiscent of 1980s and 90s films like 'The Breakfast Club'. The inspiration came from his mother's breast cancer diagnosis when he was 15, which profoundly affected him. His editor Caitlin Spiller, who had volunteered at summer camps for young cancer patients, introduced him to the camp setting. Jaques collaborated with the Teenage Cancer Trust to meet young people, finding them more rebellious and interesting than their diagnoses. He deliberately avoided hospital clichés and wanted the film to be funny and authentic. The characters' dialogue is intentionally timeless, with 90s-inspired outfits and universal slang. Ruby Stokes, who played Ella, was cast early, and Bella Ramsey joined after the first season of 'The Last of Us', making her famous; she loved the script and came on board. Jaques emphasized the importance of chemistry, and the young cast bonded quickly during rehearsals. The film features six core teenagers, including characters played by Neil Patrick Harris and Daniel Quinn-Toye. 'Sunny Dancer' is produced by Jaques' production company, which is now ten years old.
