George Hoyningen-Huene Retrospective at Palazzo Reale, Milan
Palazzo Reale in Milan presents "Glamour e Avanguardia," a major retrospective of Russian-born photographer George Hoyningen-Huene (1900–1968), curated by Susanna Brown. The exhibition, accompanied by a catalog from Moebius, spans his entire career, from fashion photography for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar to portraits, travel images, and amateur film. Hoyningen-Huene, an aristocrat exiled after the Russian Revolution, studied painting, collaborated with Man Ray in 1924, and became a master of sculptural lighting. His circle included Elsa Schiaparelli, Cecil Beaton, and lover Horst P. Horst. He photographed garments by Lelong, Chanel, Vionnet, Lanvin, and Balenciaga. The show highlights his fascination with Mediterranean light and his film work with George Cukor on "A Star Is Born" (starring Judy Garland). In 1980, the International Center of Photography in New York mounted his first major retrospective, which traveled to London and Paris, cementing his legacy as a 360-degree photographic master and influence on Robert Mapplethorpe.
