George Grosz's American Photographs Published in France

publication · 2026-04-23

A new book, "Ralph Jentsch George Grosz L'œil de l'artiste," published by Éditions Adam Biro, presents George Grosz's previously unseen photographs taken upon his emigration to the United States in 1933. Grosz, who had long dreamed of America, fled Germany just before Hitler's rise to power, disillusioned by nationalism and persecution. He brought a Leica camera, despite little experience, and began photographing aboard the ship and upon arrival in New York, capturing buildings, streets, traffic, and passersby. The publication features contact sheets and enlargements, with commentary by Ralph Jentsch. Though Grosz did not consider himself a photographer, his painterly eye for composition resulted in many small masterpieces. The book includes a text by Jacques Henric.
