Georg Baselitz to Get First Retrospective at Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice has announced its first retrospective of a living artist, Georg Baselitz, scheduled for 2019. The exhibition will span the German painter's sixty-year career through paintings, drawings, and sculptures, curated by Kosme de Baranano. This follows the success of the 2017 Philip Guston show. Meanwhile, preparations for the 58th Venice Biennale (May 11–November 24, 2019) are underway, with Ralph Rugoff as director of visual arts. The Swiss Pavilion curator Charlotte Laubard was named in March, and Finland launched an international call in November 2017. Italy's curator remains unannounced.
