Georg Baselitz's First Paris Retrospective Opens at Centre Pompidou
The Centre Pompidou in Paris is hosting the first retrospective in France dedicated to German artist Georg Baselitz, running until March 7, 2022. Curated by Bernard Blistène and Pamela Sticht, the exhibition covers Baselitz's career from the 1960s to the present, including his iconic upside-down paintings, sculptures, and graphic works. Blistène, who previously viewed Baselitz's work as a return to order, now acknowledges its significance for understanding 20th-century art. The show features key periods such as the early 1960s influenced by Hans Prinzhorn's collection, the 1969 shift to inverted imagery, and recent works incorporating black backgrounds and gold. Baselitz's sculpture, notably 'Modell für eine Skulptur' (1979-80) shown at the 1980 Venice Biennale, is also highlighted. The exhibition is sponsored by Thaddaeus Ropac gallery, which has two Paris locations.
