Georg Baselitz Exhibition at Unesco Site in Sabbioneta

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Georg Baselitz, who was born in Kamenz, Germany in 1938, is set to showcase the exhibition 'Belle Haleine' at the Galleria degli Antichi within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palazzo Giardino in Sabbioneta, Mantova, from April 27 to November 24, 2024. This exhibition will display more than 26 pieces, including large-scale paintings, sculptures, and ten linocuts that have not been shown together since 1963. Organized by the Fondazione Sabbioneta Heritage, the exhibition's title alludes to Marcel Duchamp's 1921 ready-made. Baselitz's linocuts, inspired by 17th-century Chinese artist Bada Shenren, challenge Duchamp's ideas with erotic imagery. Ezio Zani, director of the foundation, highlights the connections between Baselitz and Vespasiano Gonzaga, emphasizing the representation of the human form. Sabbioneta was designated a UNESCO site in 2008.
