Geopolitical tensions escalate as US seizes Iranian vessel near Strait of Hormuz

Over the weekend, the USS Spruance disabled an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named Touska by firing rounds from a 5-inch MK45 gun before US Marines boarded the vessel. This event took place near the Strait of Hormuz as Pakistan was gearing up for discussions between the US and Iran, set for Tuesday in Islamabad. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, criticized American threats toward Iranian vessels and ports, claiming they revealed Washington's insincerity before the talks. In a bid to preserve the negotiations, Pakistan increased diplomatic efforts with both the US and Iran, coinciding with a ceasefire set to expire midweek. US President Donald Trump announced that American negotiators would head to Islamabad on Monday, although the situation remained uncertain following the ship's seizure. Iran's joint military command pledged a response to the US actions, which CENTCOM stated were prompted by the vessel's attempt to bypass a blockade of Iranian ports.
