Geometry Of Now Festival in Moscow Blends Electronic and Academic Music

The Geometry Of Now festival took place in March at GES-2, a former power plant in Moscow, curated by Mark Fell and promoted by the V-A-C Foundation. The event explored Russia's long history of sound experimentation and electronic tradition. Fell stated that he considers music a geometric discipline and that GES-2's transitional space between industrial past and cultural future shaped the experience. The festival featured live performances, sound installations, talks, and a reading corner, creating an intimate atmosphere. Notable performances included Eliane Radigue's Naldjorlak, executed by Charles Curtis, Bruno Martinez, and Carol Robinson, which offered a contemplative, time-suspending experience. Lee Scratch Perry performed energetically despite physical limitations, while Terre Thaemlitz presented a talk on queer theory, a DJ set as DJ Sprinkles, and a video performance on body, identity, and spirituality. Fell criticized Brian Eno's dichotomy of science discovering and art digesting, arguing that such categorizations stem from tribal logic and that the world is a mix of interwoven beliefs and philosophies. The festival aimed to converge popular and academic music without hierarchy, focusing on experiential aspects of sound.
