Genova Named Italian Capital of Books 2023

In 2023, Genova has been designated as the Capitale italiana del Libro, outpacing contenders such as Firenze, Lugo (Ra), Nola (Na), San Quirico d'Orcia (Si), and San Salvo (Ch). Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano lauded Genova's cultural initiatives. The initiative, titled "A Pagine spiegate!", features public readings, educational programs, exhibitions—including a notable Man Ray display—and a special edition of Rolli Days. The jury, chaired by Francesco Perfetti, praised the city's blend of its library system with its historical assets. Mayor Marco Bucci revealed plans for longer library hours and theater reading events. Regional President Giovanni Toti emphasized the importance of reading for Liguria's cultural promotion. The project is backed by 500,000 euros. Controversy emerged regarding the selection criteria, with Undersecretary Vittorio Sgarbi proposing population-based categories. Genova succeeds Ivrea (2022).
