Genoa's unconventional photographic journey through landmarks and flood lore

publication · 2026-04-27

An article on Artribune explores Genoa through unconventional photographic itineraries, intertwining the city's iconic Lanterna lighthouse with art and natural history. In 2004, American artist Dennis Oppenheim installed "Mobile lighthouse" in the courtyard of Palazzo Bianco during the Arti & Architettura exhibition—a nearly eight-meter-tall lighthouse atop a sea turtle shell. The text recounts the 2014 flood of Genoa's Bisagno stream, which inundated the Museo di Storia Naturale Giacomo Doria, freeing a preserved shark from its formaldehyde tank. The shark, caught off Portofino in the early 1900s, had been stored in a glass case for over a century. The article draws a parallel to Damien Hirst's "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living," a shark in formaldehyde sold by gallerist Charles Saatchi for twelve million dollars. The narrative also recalls a 2004 conversation with poet Edoardo Sanguineti, who wrote an acrostic about Genoa while in Lisbon, comparing the two cities. The piece is part of Artribune Magazine #67 and includes photographs by Giovanna Silva of various Genoese buildings.
