Genoa's Museo della Città to Open in 2024 with Medieval Excavations

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

In 2024, the Museo della Città di Genova, an urban cultural hub established by the municipality, will debut at the Loggia della Mercanzia in Piazza Banchi, following the completion of excavations that began in 2021. A glass walkway will highlight the remnants of the medieval merchant city. Located close to Porto Antico, this museum is part of Genoa's cultural revival, which includes its recognition as the Italian Capital of the Book 2023 and the recent launch of various museums. Excavations uncovered a 'goldsmith's workshop' filled with artifacts. The project, which received €1.5 million in support from Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, was initially approved in late 2020 and designed by Migliore+Servetto Architects and Go-Up Architects, showcasing original items and interactive exhibits spanning nearly 2,000 years.
