Genoa's Cultural Renaissance Hinges on New Palazzo Ducale Leadership

opinion-review · 2026-04-27

Genoa, which thrived as a contemporary art center during the 1960s and 70s, has experienced a cultural downturn for the past three decades. Beppe Costa, a member of the Costa Crociere family and the proprietor of the Genoa Aquarium, has taken over as president of the Fondazione Palazzo Ducale, succeeding comedian Luca Bizzarri. Together with vice president Francesco Berti Riboli, Costa plans to rejuvenate Palazzo Ducale amidst worries about private sector influence. Since 2006, the city has prioritized Baroque exhibitions while largely ignoring architecture. Although independent cultural venues and collector contributions are scarce, there is a strong public interest, evident in the 'Maledetti architetti' tours. The author recommends emulating the cultural investments of Turin and Florence, proposing that Villa Croce transform into a research center for historical gallery archives.
