Genoa reopens renovated Children's City sensory museum at Porto Antico

institutional · 2026-04-27

Twenty-five years after its first opening, the Città dei bambini e dei ragazzi (Children's City) has reopened in Genoa's Porto Antico following a pandemic-induced hiatus. The sensory museum, now relocated from the Magazzini del Cotone to the Galleria dell'Acquario, spans 2,000 square meters with over 40 immersive installations. It is Italy's first experience museum dedicated to the five senses, targeting children aged 2 to 12 and their guardians. Features include 3D image printing walls, giant noses for scent perception, and interactive cubes for music composition. The move aims to enhance the city's exhibition offerings while maintaining independent access from the adjacent Acquario. The €5 million investment is equally split between Porto Antico di Genova and Costa Edutainment, which will manage the facility until 2036. President Mauro Ferrando stated the museum underwent a total renewal to engage today's children, who differ from those of 1992. City youth councillor Francesca Corso emphasized the importance of tourism for families and young visitors. However, no resolution has been reached regarding workers laid off in 2020 after the previous operator, Festival della Scienza, terminated their employment following the pandemic closure. The museum's reopening is part of broader Genoese revitalization efforts including the Terzo Valico railway, the Diga Foranea breakwater, and waterfront redevelopment projects.
