Genoa Hosts Zones Portuaires Festival After Morandi Bridge Collapse

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

One month after the Morandi Bridge collapse on August 14, 2018, Genoa is hosting the fourth edition of Zones Portuaires, an international festival dedicated to port cities. The interdisciplinary event runs until September 16, 2018, featuring visits, performances, workshops, exhibitions, screenings, and talks in the port areas. Organizers Maria Elena Buslacchi and Maria Pina Usai debated whether to proceed after the tragedy but decided to continue, inspired by the port's solidarity and creative response. The festival originated in Marseille in 2012 and has been held in Genoa since 2015, also taking place in Saint-Nazaire. This year's theme is "Facce del Porto" (Faces of the Port), highlighting the human dimension of port work. An installation on the breakwater features large-format portraits of port workers by Simone Lezzi, part of JR's global Inside Out project. Francesco Maresca, councilor delegated to the port, emphasized the festival's significance in showcasing Genoa's resilience and pride.
