Genevieve Chua's Abstract Paintings Reveal Narrative Through Titles and Composition
Singapore-based painter Genevieve Chua creates abstract works where underlying narratives emerge through titles referencing real-world events. Her compositions feature grids of squares with floating objects resembling prinskorvar and serpentines falling across the frame like condiments. Another painting contains a block of equal horizontal rectangles forming thin strips occupying nearly half the canvas. These visual elements evoke sensory experiences like sneezes or splashes, suggesting spring's arrival. Chua's titles often imply events happening in slow motion or with altered temporal perceptions. Her visual elements slide along painting surfaces and extend beyond edges into viewers' consciousness. Chua maintains representation with Silverlens in Manila and had her most recent solo exhibition Vestiges and Halves at 71/2 in Seoul during 2017. In 2011, she participated in the BMW Young Asian Artist Series III at Singapore Tyler Print Institute. Currently based in London, the artist was featured in ArtReview Asia's Summer 2018 issue through the Future Greats section sponsored by K11 Art Foundation. Artist and writer Heman Chong, also Singapore-based, contributed to this feature.
