Geneva's Fall 2003 Art Season: Photography, Biennial, and Resistance

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

In late 2003, Geneva launched two major events: '50 JPG' (50 Days for Photography in Geneva) and the 10th BIM (Biennial of the Moving Image). Curator Joerg Bader organized 'Représentation du travail/Travail de représentation' for 50 JPG, exploring links between labor and representation. The BIM subtitled itself 'Artistic Creation as an Act of Resistance,' featuring a retrospective of William Kentridge. The Mamco opened 'ORNICAR !', a cycle of eleven exhibitions curated by director Christian Bernard, including works by Klara Kuchta (hair as cultural phenomenon), Luc Andrié, and Claude Lévêque. The season reflects Geneva's distinct, politically engaged art scene.
