Geneva's Contemporary Art Scene: Museums, Fairs, and Urban Renewal
The contemporary art scene in Geneva is increasingly recognized globally, thanks to partnerships, the art fair artgenève, and urban revitalization efforts. Central to this is the Quartier des Bains, which includes the BAC building that hosts MAMCO, led by Lionel Bovier, and the Centre d'Art Contemporain, overseen by Andrea Bellini. MAMCO's exhibitions for 2023 feature a retrospective of Ian Burn and an exploration of the Pictures Generation. The CAC presents 'Chrysalis, the butterfly dream' in collaboration with the Collection de l'Art Brut. A significant renovation of the BAC, designed by Kuehn Malvezzi, is planned for 2024 to 2028. The 11th edition of artgenève took place in January 2023, showcasing 90 galleries. Meanwhile, the MAH, under Marc-Olivier Wahler, continues its 'Carta bianca' series with Ugo Rondinone, alongside other prominent institutions like the Ariana Museum and the International Red Cross Museum.
