Genesis Breyer P-Orridge Retrospective at Andy Warhol Museum Explores Pandrogyne Identity Through Collage

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From June 15 to September 15, 2013, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh presented a retrospective on Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, showcasing over thirty years of collaborative artistry. Titled S/HE IS HER/E, the exhibition centered around the theme of the 'cut,' drawing connections to the surgical and hormone treatments P-Orridge underwent alongside Lady Jaye Breyer to forge a combined pandrogyne identity. After Lady Jaye's passing in 2007, Genesis continued this profound collaboration, framing the exhibition as a tribute to her memory. Most works were collage-based, created during P-Orridge's influential period in alternative music, including pieces like Mum and Dad (1971), which challenged traditional family dynamics. The show focused on visual art rather than music projects, with key collaborators such as Cosey Fanni Tutti and Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson. The Pandrogyne Manifesto (2003–11) highlighted the project's avant-garde ethos. This review was published in ArtReview's September 2013 edition.
