Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Provocative Artist and Industrial Music Pioneer, Dies at 70

artist · 2026-04-20

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, a boundary-crossing figure in art and music, died in 2020 after a career marked by controversy and innovation. They co-founded the subversive collective COUM Transmissions, staging performances that challenged societal norms, most notably the 1976 exhibition Prostitution at the ICA in London, which sparked debate and earned them the label 'wreckers of civilisation'. That same show debuted Throbbing Gristle, the influential industrial band where P-Orridge served as lead vocalist, recording nine studio albums and pioneering the genre. After Throbbing Gristle disbanded in 1981, they co-founded the experimental band Psychic TV. P-Orridge's early years included dropping out of the University of Hull and a brief stint in the Transmedia Explorations commune in London. In later life, they moved to the US following a police investigation prompted by allegations in a Channel 4 documentary, and there partnered with Jacqueline Breyer (Lady Jaye) on the Padrogeny Project, undergoing surgical procedures to merge identities. Their art gained institutional recognition, with Tate Britain acquiring their archives in 2009, and exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in 2013 and the Rubin Museum of Art in New York in 2016.
