Generali Foundation Collection Tours Europe with 'Occupying Space'

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Established in 1988, the Generali Foundation, an Austrian corporate collection, initiated its inaugural international tour with the exhibition 'Occupying Space' at Haus der Kunst in Munich in March 2005. This exhibition subsequently moved to Witte de With in Rotterdam and MAC in Zagreb, concluding in December 2005. Curated by Sabine Breitwieser and Thomas Weski, it presented over 1,500 pieces from 160 artists, emphasizing conceptual, minimalist, and socially engaged art. Notable contributions came from Gordon Matta-Clark, Valie Export, and Alice Creischer. The exhibition utilized various spaces, including galleries, the foyer, bookstore, and cafeteria, featuring installations by Franz West and others. The foundation functions as a museum, bolstering the reputation of its parent insurance company amidst challenges in cultural profitability.
